TV tonight: 'Raising Hope,' 'Parenthood'

Fox, 8 ET/PT
There aren't many shows that would think of combining Christmas and the Mayan Apocalypse - and there are even fewer that would have any chance of pulling it off. But if any show can, it's Raising Hope, which tonight finds the family preparing for what Virginia thinks will be their last Christmas - or pre-Christmas, seeing as she thinks the world is going to end Dec. 21. Unfortunately for Virginia, that fast-approaching end date is likely to make Maw Maw even less inhibited, assuming that's even possible.

Here's something even those of us who have little interest in watching Dancing With the Stars can get behind: an episode spoofing Dancing With the Stars, built around James Van Der Beek's dancing debut on the show, an event the show promises will be jaw-dropping. Not that Chloe will notice; she's too busy taking advantage of James' absence by running a con in his empty penthouse.
NBC, 10 ET/PT
Parenthood reaches its winter break with a Christmas episode of its own, as the Bravermans gather to celebrate the holiday, the first Crosby and Jasmine will face as a family. The good tidings, however, do not extend to Sarah, who remains stuck between her feelings for Mark and her fondness for Hank. All series are never going to work for all people, and I count among those who have never bought into Parenthood's characters or many of its performances. But there should always be a place on TV for a family drama, and I'm happy to have this one hold that place for those who enjoy it.
